Home Defense Guns
The question, the ultimate question, the question of life, the universe, and everything; what is the best home defense gun? No matter where you go, you’ll hear this argument fought with vigor from every side. Is it a handgun? A rifle? A shotgun? Everyone has their opinions on why they’re right and most people can defend their position reasonably well; however, defending their position doesn’t make them correct. The simple answer is; it’s the gun you train with.
This seems like a ridiculously simple answer to such a debate, and you’re right, it is. It’s a very common-sense view of the argument that most people blow right past. I had a friend that was a competitive clay shooter. Anyone that can shoot a moving four-inch disk I would hand a shotgun for home defense any day. My wife has only ever shot her handgun and completely shuns my AR. In a life or death situation, she should use her pistol. I spent most of my time in the military using a rifle in houses on deployments and wouldn’t hesitate to grab my AR for home defense. Every one of these answers is correct, because under stress people will always revert to their base level of training.
At the end of the day, all these weapons have benefits and drawbacks for home defense use. All of them have the capability to over penetrate a person and walls, especially if you don’t learn about the type of round you’re using (hint: AR people “green tip” is not a good home defense choice). The simple answer is to get out and train. Bring up your lowest level to create a new base. It takes 10,000 reps to become proficient at a task so if you want to be proficient at all three weapon systems, put in the 30,000 reps.
